Xbox series x gearing up to be a beast of a machine.

Its been no secret that Microsoft has taken a rather open approach to revealing their new console generation with the company having revealed the product last year already. This approach sadly has not been widely practised as their closest competitors PlayStation have yet to reveal the even a prototype although some Dev kits have been leaked on Reddit.

Microsoft has made it known now that their new offering will sport a Zen 2 chip which clocks in at about 3.8 GHz constant and 3.6 GHz if developers want to make use of Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT). The new console will be sporting 16 GB DDR6 RAM which should go some way in making features like quick resume a possibility now and with future optimization that particular feature could become even more seamless.

The GPU will is built on the foundations of RDNA 2 architecture and it has 52 Compute Units and a 1.8GHz clock speed, which is a 56 percent frequency boost over the GCN-based GPU found in the Xbox One X.This should bring it nearer to modern GPU standards as far as gaming is concerned. In fact, in some benchmarks, the GPU performance is close to the GTX 2080 in some titles.

In terms of space to store your games, the series X features a 1TB custom NVMe SSD, with IO throughput measuring in at 2.4GB/s (raw) and 4.8GB/s for compressed data. Which is a significant jump on the Xbox One memory throughput 120MB/s.

Microsoft is aiming to deliver 4k/60 gaming but if developers choose to lower the resolution the console can hit 120 frames a second at 1080p. The movement to the RDNA 2 Architecture should enable support of Ray tracing which is basically a new way of allowing in-game lighting so work more realistically.

Microsoft is also planning on allowing users to purchase SSD expansion cards up to 1 Terabyte which runs at the same speed as the internal SSD.

All in all the new offering from Microsoft is gearing up to be a very decent upgrade on current devices but its value proposition will be determined by its pricing at launch.
