The Culling is back with an absurd monetization plan

Updated: May 23, 2020

The Culling is a first-person based Battle Royal that is developed and published by American studio Xaviant. It initially started as a beta in the wake of Battle Royal's emergence onto the scene with popular titles like Fortnite and PUBG.

The Culling initially grow to some good recognition as players started to gravitate towards it to the point where it once had 12000 concurrent players playing it at a time according to steam charts.

This positive response to the game was short lived though as players began to flock to the other big hitters in the Battle Royal space i.e PUBG and Fortnite. Fans cited that the lack of features and a small number of enemy players to play against was a major flaw with the game which led to the culling being axed and replaced with The Culling 2 which was panned by fans and thus subsequently cut after which it had a short stint as a free to play game.

Xaviant has decided to release the game to the masses again but with a charged up monetization model that to many seems absurd at the very least. The monetization goes as follows:

Xaviant has opted to what we can only describe as a pay to play, pay to win model to relaunch an already failed game. This, as you can imagine, did not go down well with the majority of the gaming community which can be seen by looking at the like to dislike ratio on the video of their response to the criticism they received.

Xaviant goes on to explain their reasons for the new approach in the video below or alternatively go to the PC Gamer article for a more detailed breakdown. Based on their explanations they did provide good enough reasons as to why they chose to go down the path they did with regards to the monetization and did try and ease any bad feelings towards the game by allowing players to play up to 10 matches vs the 1 match free limit but we doubt this will do much to save this game now and it might just be dead on arrival even just considering the current Battle Royal landscape.
