Sony Releases PS5 details

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

Sony recently released details of its upcoming new console without giving away any pictures of what the PS5 looks like.PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny mentioned that the new consoles will feature backwards compatibility which was the main drawback of Sony Consoles for the last decade.

The new console will feature a Zen 2 CPU that will be clocked at 3.5 GHz with a variable frequency which is somewhat different from Microsoft's approach with the series X which is fixed at two frequencies depending on the situation.

The GPU will feature 36 compute units running at 2.23 GHz which translates to about 10.28 TFlops of power which is smaller than that of the Xbox series X. The PS5 will, however, make use of Ray tracing technology which should aid in the realistic illumination of game worlds thanks to the GPU's RDNA 2 architecture. The RAM will be 16GB of DDR6 memory.

The system will feature a custom 825GB SSD with a throughput of about 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed). Which is faster than that of the series X.

The PS5 will feature expansion capabilities but more importantly, it will relay on NVMe SSD Slot to do so. Meaning that PS5 user won't have to purchase specific expansion cards like those of the series X.

These are considerable advancements but one thing is clear for the new console generation to be considered an upgrade the price at launch has to be justifiable to consumers
